was the gift of radiance.
A word reserved
for the sun
or angels
and other things
that give off light.
But never
For an ordinary,
earthly,
unremarkable girl
like her.
Radiant.
She took it in
and savoured it
letting its surprising flavour
burst on her tongue.
The syllables dissolved
and whizzed through her bloodstream
like champagne bubbles
rising to the surface,
they cobbled her skin
and speckled her eyes
with light.
And she was radiant. |
